England Book Club: The Wind in the Willows – part 4
This week we’ll read the next two chapters of The Wind in the Willows (Chapter 7 – The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and Chapter 8 – Toad’s Adventure).
In chapter 6, the animals of the Willows work together to find Otter’s missing son, Portly. In this section of the book, Mole and Rat hear some mystical music (apparently Portly can hear it too). The music has some sort magical quality to it. Anyone who has ever read any Greek Mythology might be reminded of a few stories.
In chapter 8, we start to see a pattern developing. The odd numbered chapters seem to be slower, looking at feelings, while the even chapters are fast-paced and loaded with action. In the 8th chapter, Toad does exactly what we’d expect him to do – he gets himself in some trouble.
Here’s the assignment:
- Who is the mysterious piper? What message is the author trying to present with this character and his song?
- What needs to be done about Toad’s behavior? What should the other animals do about him?
Each of these answers should take somewhere between 5-7 sentences.
Every student in our England group is required to participate. You must comment on this post with your thoughts, then come back and comment on what other people have said – you are required to make an effort to keep the conversation going by replying to at least 2 other students (more than just “I agree” or “you are right.” Give them reasons why you agree/disagree or what they said that was meaningful – make this a discussion).

1. The mysterious piper is a demi god. he sounds to be part devil or somthing because he has horns and stuff. he also sounds very genrious. For you see he bows to them and for some odd reason have the earge to bow back. But by the time they get up the beast is gone. I belive that the piper stands for the kindness in the world along with the hatered that comes with it. The song represents the sounds of all the madness in the world all in a small song
coming from a small pan-pipe.
2. Mr. Toad’s atitude needs to change, hes very boring and miserable. He slunches up in a ball at one point. Hes becoming very depressed and needs the other animals to help him. The other animals should probobly try to cheer him up. i mean hes going to become so depressed it brings down the rest of them.
I agree with you his atitude does need to change, he does always seem a little dull and boring.
Hmm, I don’t agree about the demi-god part… I believe this character was a pureblooded god. To be more specific I think it was Pan (If you’ve read Greek mythology or even the Percy Jackson series you’ll know who). On the other hand, I do agree about Toad… He has become dull and boring.
I disagree with you Autumn, because in the book it says that Piper is a Demi- God. You dont make your own opinion, because it tells you what Piper is in the chapter.
Okay well after many people said it was a Demi-God on here… I looked it up. It said it was a god and I’m sticking to that. I’m pretty sure I can make my own opinions. Not trying to be rude, but it’s just how I feel .
I agree with what you say about the piper. He does seem like he is generous and sort of a gentleman.
I agree with you that the demi-god sounds genourous and sounds like a devil beacause of the horns. But I dont agree that the song represents madness. i think that it represents happiness because its beautiful and it helps them find Portly.

I agree with you. I don’t think that he is a devil. Just because something has horns does not mean that it is a devil. In greek mythology they talk about minotaurs which are half bull and half man and they have horns and that does not make them devils just minotaurs.
The mysterious Piper is a Demi-God. But, it also states that he is a helper and a friend. His image seems to describe him well, but his personality can go either way. His image supports he since he has horns, but his personality also supports him. In the book it says he is a helper and a friend, so Piper is not a “devil” of any sort. Piper stands out by being very generous, but also by being a Demi- God. The song represents all of the madness and craziness happening, all in a short and sweet song.
I agree with you on saying the piper isn’t a devil. Because how could he really be a devil if he was a friend…and a helper? I think the people who portray the piper as a devil really just think that since they thought about him having horns. But after you really meet him, you realize that he isn’t even close to being a devil.
I also agree that he isn’t a “devil” of any sorts. No devil that I know of would be a friend and a helper.

totally agree with you hannah on the thought of the song, it is somewhat madness. and maisie i agree with you i would like to change my thoughts on the piper he doesnt seem like a devil because one you get to know him he is really a friend and a helper thank you for helping me understand that
I disagrre with that the piper player is genorus but i do think he is kind and helpful
I agree that the piper is very generous, and represents the kindness and evil in the world, but i don’t think that he is a devil. I think he is the Pan, the god of nature, and just wants to help rat and mole.
The piper is kind and he is like the Pan in greek mythology but he is also like Mr Tumnus in Chronicles of Narnia The Lion , The Witch and the Wardrobe. In those stories they represent good things and do good things unless directed by the queen.

1.) I believe this mysterious character from chapter seven is Pan whom is a Greek god. Pan is a god that has to do with nature and what-not, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it was him (considering they met him in the woods). Like Emily said, I think this mysterious character represents genuine kindness. Another thing I get from the story is that with kindess, hatred is born. In my opinion that’s what this song is about… all of the hatred and chaos in the world.
2.) Toad’s personality takes a complete turn. He used to be a very outgoing, cheerful character whom I always took a liking to. Now he is dull, drabby and overall depressed. The other animals need to figure out what the problem is and comfort him. Toad will never get better if his friends aren’t there for him.
I agree on how Toads perspective has changed. When we first met him at the beginning of the story, he was very thoughtful and outgoing. Now it seems as if he drifts away fro the others.
Good point Autumn! Whithout his friends Toad will never feel better. And he will continue to be depressed and sad. I also used to like Toad but now he isnt my favorite.

That’s a good thought about which specific god he is. And after hearing the reasons, I believe he is Pan not a demi-god. She did research people!

I agree how you say Toads perspective had changed. Also how he the author made him seem outgoing at first. What you said about Pan(the god of nature0 is very interesting. I always thought the Greek myths to be exiting and interesting.
The mysterious creature is a demi god and his song is trying to present that the song is meant to be heard once, then forgotten. I think this because near the end of the song, if you read it closely, then you can see that the demi god made him forget. He was trying to present that he was not scary and that he was part animal too.
Toad needs to see the bright side of even the most upsetting circumstances. He needs to think of what he can do to fix the situation. The other animals should try to help him out of his tough spot and see what they can do to make him see the best part of the world, not the money side.
I agree with what you said about the meaning of he piper’s song. It’s probably heard and understood at first because of all of it’s importance. But then again would be easily forgotten by some.

I believe the piper would be the demi-god that Mole and Rat saw when they found Portly. He was like a person but he had horns and huffs for feet, he was also really hairy. But what drawn them to him was his song and his ray of light. When they got closer and closer they couldn’t do anything but listen and be indulged in the beautiful music. What I think the author is trying to present is that the piper knew that they would try and help their friend. So because they at least were going to try he lead them to him, and they found Otter‘s son. Also I think that he used the beautiful music to bring them in.
I agree with you on how you describe the piper. Connecting your description to mine, with the horns and hoofed feet, he kinda looks like a goat.

the mysterious piper is a god. The way the author present’s him seems to me a little off. His immage does seem to forsee him, or defines how other’s see him. I think the author is trying to say that he need’s to be more strict and controling. Not like “oh im amazing i own you all” but, maybe take control of his life. I belive that mr.toad’s behavior does need to change a little bit. To me he seem’s very needy. It’s all about him all the time and that part of him does need to change. I belive that his atitude will eventually make every one that cares about him and wants to be around him now will push them away and not care any more because his behavior will eventually get old. I think the other animal’s should eathier get some new friend’s, or figure out a way to make him realize that acting so sad and depressing all the time wont get him anywhere in life.
I dont really undersand what your saying about Piper being “off”. But i do agree that Toads attitude is getting him nowhere.

I agree, the mysterious piper gives off a “godly” vibe. I also agree that Mr. Toads attitude needs to change, but it will get old and he’ll go back to normal.
I agree that toad needs to realize that acting all depressed wont get him anywhere in life. But i also think that the other animals should try to help him.
Yeah, the other animals need to help him by throwing a party maybe or just being there for him. Sometimes when you have alot of money, you may get carried away and only think materialistically and then everything turns into money. I think when you find friends who can support you through everything you start to replace your material things with friends and love and caring and then, Toad will get back to himself and make his life worthwhile, or he could go back to being his selfish self.
The mysterious piper is a god who seems to me a little evil. But in the story he turns out to be pretty nice. From the picture above he looks kind of like a goat with a beard. He has a pipe that he plays songs on. He plays a small song on it that represent the world around him.
Mr. Toad is not the character he was at the beginning of the story. He used to bee a happy and estatic person. Now as the story progresses, he is not that happy. He seems lonely and a little sad. I say lonely since the other animals don’t help him that much. I say the animals should encourage him a little, to get his spirits up.
I think Piper was a Demi god. He was good to help Mole and Rat find Portly. I think the Author was trying to present a god becuase they were drawn to the area by “heavenly music.” When they got there they found portly and felt like they had something important happen to them. The only problem was they couldn’t remember what had happpend.
I think Toads adittude needed to be changed while he was in prison. He needed to realize being put there was entirely his own fault , and that being upset about it isnt going to help his situation. He was lucky the girl wanted to help him. He was acting like his money was the only thing important to him the whole time. The other animals could have helped by talking to him to get him to cheer up.

I think that the mysterious piper is the sound of mother nature. All the wind and leaves of the river creating joyfull noise to mole and rates ears. I think the auther is trying to get us to picture the perfect mix of natures music. Like the sound of birds tweeting, sound of wind plowing tree branches, and the sweet sound of the summer breese. In my opinion i think the auther did a pretty darn good job.
Toads behavior is horrible! Its like he doesnt think before he does anything. I think he needs to think about what he is doing. The other animals should turn him back in to the police if they find out he escaped. Then he could have alot of time to think.
You are right in some ways his behavior is pretty bad, but i wouldent say horrable, and you are also right because he doesent really think about what he does before he does it and that does need to change he should calm down breath and think before he act’s.
Toad’s personality is now completely different. He used to be very kind and outgoing, but now he is a dark, upset character. His friends need to be there to support him since he is depressed and very sad. If he has no one there for him, he will not get better, or feel comforted. He will continue to feel miserable until his friends are there for him
Hannah, I completely agree with you. Toad did used to be nice and now he’s dark. I think the reason for this is some kind of ignorance and mis treatment that he is trying to get through by buying motor cars and by waisting his money. His friends are trying to get help, but that is I think his way of coping with his problems.
What Toad needs to do about his behavior is stop being so greedy. Also he needs to be grateful for what he has and stick with it. Not be envious and steal other people’s stuff. He also needs not expect everything to be don e for him. I think he needs to learn how to things on his own. He also needs to not think because he is rich he can buy away everything. I think his friends could help him by showing him what it is like to not be rich. Or not to have the nicest clothes, but still ok. Also show him what it looks like to work for what you want not just having handed off to him.

I believe the mysterious piper is type of god. I say this because he just appered in the woods and acts kinda weird. I think that if I were Rat and Mole, I wouldnt have even have gone near him because he looks like a trickster. He looks different in the picture than what I amagined. In his song I think he is singing songs of sorrow and madness. I say this because in the end of this chapter he says these weird things like “walk nearer” and “i set the trap”. I would be pretty creeped out.
I think toad needs to be less cocky and less of a know it all. He thinks that he knows everything and needs to just take a chill pill. If I were Rat and Mole I would lock him in a shed until he gets a better behavior. Just like my coach said “Your not going to get anywhere by paying for camps to teach you how to act or get better at things. You might as well lock yourself in a closet and teach yourself.” I would also leave him for a month and come back to him later, to see if he thought about what he had done.
Haha yeah Mole really should take a chill pill or count to ten or something. He was reallly freaking out… I probably would be too in i was in ‘jail’. o .o or someones pet.
Tori I agree that Toad does act like a know it all and is extremely cocky. If I were in his shoes, I would be using my money to give things to the poor and provide things to the community so it can prosper. Also, Ilike how you addressed the fact that you would lock him in a closet until he got better behavior.

1)The mysterious piper player is a centaur that plays the pipes to bring mole and rat to him because he has portly.The centaurs music is mysterious like him but it sounds like it has a kind tone . The music shows how he is a helpful kind person /horse .However the centaurs are know for being very kind and open hearted.Like in the movie narnia where the little girl and the centaur have a good friendship and he is helpful with helping them find there way through narnia.Like how the centaur in the wind and the willows brings mole and rat to him to find portly the baby otter.
2)Toad needs to know that his behavior is wrong and that he should be more thankful for what he has.Like all the money and how kind his friends are to him .I think what his friends need to do is make him learn from his mistakes.Whether that means sending him back to jail or another unkonown punishment for what he has done .However the most important lesson that toad needs to learn is a lesson on how to spend his money wisely.
1.) The mysterious piper is a demi god. But because he says he is a friend and a helper, I thought he might be there to help the animals of the riverbank. I think the idea the piper was trying to portray through the song that the piper was playing that with happiness and peace, comes war and hatred. Or simply just something to portray the world around him.
2.) Toad’s attitude really needs to differ from what it is now. He used to be social, outgoing, happy, and adventurous! Now he’s dull, depressed, not very social, and just flat out sad. I think the other animals should take part on changing Toad back to the way he originally was, since pretty much ALL he animals are either friends of acquaintances with Toad. And anyways, who could hate Toad? I think all the animals should get together and just visit Toad and just recollect on all their past exploits with each other. I think that could potentially change Toad back to normal.

It really is! He’s such a deep character! He just has that personality where you’re physically unable to have anything against him!
i agree he is always trying to help with things. to me it’s kinda weird.
Some people are like that. They want to help because in the end it makes them feel rewarded. Sometimes they “help” when really they are doing something wrong. Instead of asking what to do, they ASSUME they are doing the right thing. They don’t usually end up asking because they belive they will get more of a reward if it is a surprise, and asking the person they’re helping would spoil it, or they think that asking woul take too long and they want their gratitude NOW! That means they have serious problems.
The piper is a god. Not just a god but he is a demi god, a demi god is a half person half god creator. I believe that the god was using this music to kind loower them into him. The music would loower them in like a worm on a hook, and a fish coming towards the boat.
I think that his friends should convince him of putting 3/4‘s of that money in a bank. They should also force him to live in one of their houses and see how it is to live a life without being able to do anything you want. This will help the toad because he will see he can have fun and do things without always using money. It will also make him non selfish.

I really hadn’t thought about Toad being that way because of his friends not being there, and now I actually see that. There was all this time when they weren’t around Toad. Maybe that was the time where he was alone and became greedy, and he was alone.

1.The mysterious piper is a demi god who plays beautiful music. When Ratty and Mole heard it they though it was breathtaking and amazing. The demigod is very warmhearted and giving. He had not been seen by many people/animals before so for Ratty and Mole to see him it was sort of an honor. From how they bowed at him and where so awestruck it shows that he was very respected. The demigods song was to show kind of a angelic feature about him, that he could play beautiful music that no one else could. Seems pretty godly like to me. 😀
2. Okay so The animals need to have an intervention with toad or something and talk to him about how rude and greedy he is being. Like when peter wouldn’t take off his mexican hat in Family Guy. He needs to change his outlook on life, he always expects things to be kittens and rainbows but then when it turns out it’s not and things do go as he planned he throws a fit and acts like a baby. Before he acts he should think about the consequences. Another thing i noticed is that he wastes alot of his money of things he doesnt really need. So he should probably stop doing that too.
Lol… Family Guy reference for TAP homework? And yes, I think they should have an intervention/ talk of some sort with Toad too.
There is nothing wrong with using a reference from family guy, as long as it helps get her point out and helps the reader (thats us) understand what she thinks by comparing it to a show that our generation watches. We understand silly cartoons so if she compares that to her response, we will be able to understand that too.
I agree with him wasting his money. He like… Throws it all away on stupid things. He is very greedy and and rude about his money at the same time. Toad needed to get his act together.
I agree that he wastes his money on silly things and that he can be greedy and rude. Now that he had gotten locked up he has begun to think and now he is miserable and upset. I think that he might be realizing that he must be responsible and how he should do things and that could make him depressed because he is carefree and silly.

Toad has completly changed. He has gotten sad. He is not the happy person he was in the beginning and i think he just need his friends to cheer him up a little bit.
He has changed, but he wasn’t happy, really.. He was just boasting and gloating about he has this and the others don’t. I thought he acted a bit snooty, but then he got depressed and realized what he had in jail.
1. the new animal person thing in this book is piper is a devil demand god. he has horns and kind of looks like a half horse goat thing. his song is very beautiful sounding. i think the author made the god based on the song.

1. The mysterious Piper is a demi god, and he’s super creepy looking in the book. (I have a picture in my book… So weird looking.) The mysterious piper seems to be evil at first but turns out to be good. The god made them forget about the song. Maybe it was only meant for them to hear it once or something. I really didn’t understand.
2. Oh.. Toad. His friends tried to stop him from doing what he did. He was a nasty Toad when he got into the jail for stealing the motorcar. He needed to change his nasty attitude, and he did after he got out of jail. He was nicer and lost a lot, making him realize what a lot of people didn’t have that he did. But he did have to have something done because he was selfish and obsessed with cars. His friends finally went to him and stopped it by locking him in his room. It worked until Toad fooled Rat.

I think this character, as Autumn said was Pan. Pan is the epic god to the satyrs’, they go on searches to find him, any who he is full of nature and kindness, especially since they found him in the woods. But, this character has a dark, evil side in him. Evil realms inside him, but so does happiness.
Toad has changed so dramatically, he went from a happy gifted soul, to depressed little toad sitting on a log (metaphorically speaking). What Toad needs though is his friends, and their love and niceness they have for him. He definitely needs an attitude check, they good one at least.

It says in the book that the mysterious piper is a demi-god who is a friend and a helper. It says his call is dominant and imperious. At first, they were afraid,but his beautiful song changed their minds. With this character, the author, I think was trying was trying to send a message that if you aren’t selfish, good things will follow. The mole and rat wouldn’t stop until they found Portly and in return, the demi-god did them good. The demi-god was basically a sign of hope for the two animals. Once they heard the beautiful melody, Rat knew that they had to continue and that Portly was closer then they thought. Turns out he was under the careful watch of the demi-god.
Toad needs to stop focusing on himself and he needs to start caring about others. It says in the book that Toad says,” This is the end of everything at least its the end of the career of Toad, which is the same thing; the popular and handsome Toad, the rich and hospitable Toad.” This shows that he is caring more about himself than what his friends are feeling right now. The other animals need to help take care of him by managing his money and by not allowing him to go by any motor cars that will triger his theif mode.
I agree that Toad needs to not only care about himself, and care more for others. i wouldnt even be talking to him if he acted the way he does if I knew him. I dont like people like that.
I believe that Piper is a demi-god. He does have horns so that may throw you off and make you think that he is a devil but does everything that has a horn or horns make them a devil? He is also a friend because he helps them by attracting them with his crazy song which leads them to otters son.
I think toad has become very depressed and upset. He seems bored and depressed and his friends need to help cheer him up quickly before he gets worse. Maybe they should throw him a party, that wil surely help him and he loves parties and excitement.

I belive the Piper is some what a demi god because he just showed up in the middle of the woods and thats really wierd. I think the author is trying to say don’t go near strangers. I would never go near him because with his really scary song he could be a evil god.
I think what needs to be done about Toads behavor is he needs to learn to spend his money right not just all on motor cars. Mole and rat need to talk to him and let him learn all about the correct why about money. I think he needs to be locked up in his room again.

The descriptions the book almost push towards him being a animal. But the fact that it seemed almost like a dream to Mole and Rat makes it more like a god. In my opinion, the author is trying to represent dreams and happiness. If you help others, happiness will lead the way. The god’s melody lead them right to where Portly was and then he disappeared. It was hope.

Toad just needs to become a more caring friend that will do stuff for more than himself. I think that the other animals should just find a way to make him feel better about himself. Toad being depressed isn’t going to help him any. And maybe if the other animals help him, Toad will give something back to them.

That it is something to indulge in but it might be gone sooner or later. like how when he was playing to add to the mood the sun came out of now where. then it eventually disappears again and sets. just like the pipers music. it is there but then it is gone.
2)i think that toads behavior needs to be a lot better. i think that something needs to be done to punish him. i really didn’t see a problem with putting him is jail. i thought that was a good idea because i thought that maybe it would teach him a lesson… but no. somehow he escapes and discuses himself as a washwoman. i think that the other animal like mole. rat. and badger really need to talk some sense into him. also, i think that they should be in control of how he spends his money and he should to be allowed to waste it on senseless things. if all else fails just send him to jail again. i think that seemed to be working before… well lets just say it was before he decided to escape again.
I don’t agree with punishing him. I know he isn’t the smartest, but he can at least talk to his friends and tell them what his thoughts are.
The mysterious piper is a demi god. His appearance is sort of devil like and scary, but he is actually nice. He bows to them and they bow back. I believe the author is trying to show that sometimes things may appear different than they actually are. The song however stands for all the madness that is occuring, but its a short little song.
Toads attitude takes a turn toward the worst. He used to he cheerful and outgoing but now he is just dull and depressed. I think the other animals should help him out by trying to figure out the problem. If they figure our the problem they could talk to him about it and help him through it.
I agree with you about toad I really hope the rest of his friends help him.
1.)The mysterious piper is some sort of god. Once he first shows himself to everyone. His appearance and attitude very scary. But he turned out being very kind. I think the author was trying to explain that there’s more that meets the eye. And that a person that looks different from everyone, could be very much like you. The song represents the craziness that’s going on during everything that’s going on.
2.) Toad needs a lot changed to his personality so far. Because in the very beginning of the story, Toad was very energetic, fun, and really wanted to make something of his life. But now he’s not as happy as he used to be, and i can tell he’s trying to hide how sad he really is. I think that Frog and mole should really try to see whats wrong because i know that they think somethings going on. I have no idea what could be wrong with Toad. But i guess everyone gets depressed once in a while.
The piper is a peculiar demi god that is very giving and kind. I think he stands for equality in the world because he dose not look very nice but has a kind heart. I think the Piper is a nice character because he shows respect to the others by bowing. The pipers song seems to mean that there is a lot of evil in the world and madness.
Mr. Toad, oh what to do about Mr. Toad? He is slipping into a depression. Toad used to be a happy animal with life in his eyes now he is detaching himself from the world. Toad needs to be more thankful for all he has; I think his friends should tell him that. I know if I were him I would be very thankful.
The piper is a demi god who has a very scary appearence that makes him look like an evil creature , but thats wrong . He is very kind which goes to show you can’t judge anyone by appearence. He has alot of respect for everything going on around him espically the forest animals. I think his song explained all the wrong doings and craziness going around in the world but in a strange way made me think that peacfulness could be there if we tried .
I was actulley very shocked at Toads odd behavior in theese chapters. He used to be so outgoing and fun. Now he is super depressed and seems angry and sad about everything in the world. He also is being very unreasonable about his money and his actions toward his friends . I think he truley has lost alot of his judgement, even though he didn’t have much to start with I think his friends need to really help him get through this rough time before Toad get worse .

1. Okay so the god i love alot! He came off kinda of like how they make gods look in movies, all like scary and fierce. Turns out hes nice! And he makes music. I love that about him cause i live for music and since hes a god the music sounds like amazing. I wish i could hear it XD haha that sounds weird. Though the author was trying to say that no matter how a person may appear or come off on u, doesnt mean thats what their like, it just means that you should get to know a person before judging them.
2. Okay im kind of sad that toad is more depressed than usual.See toad was really funny and hyper in the beginning and now hes just eh. Maybe someone needs to help him out, its not good to bottle up your feelings and i think thats what toad is doing. Im happy he didnt go to jail though, Book wouldnt be interesting if toad was stuck in jail!

He looks scary and mean,this is wrong. the demi god to me represents that guy that sits at the back of the bus in the city. i say this because that guy looks scary but is really nice. this is a weird example but it works. what the author is trying to do is show that you could not judge a book by its cover
2) at the beginning of the book toad was hyper and happy. now he is depressing. this is the toad we dont like. what toads friends do is cheer him up by giving him ice cream. the reason i say ice cream because who doesnt like ice cream. this is what i think they should do.

the piper is a demi-god. the piper is also really nice. people said that he looks mean and scary andthe kind of person or creature that most people would not want to be around but they are all wrong. i think the piper represents one of those people that get thought of as the odd one out because of looks or they way they are. he is like one of the many that get treated the wrong way and no one notices him until he does something that proves them wrong.
at the beginning of the book the toad was like me, always happy and hyper. but now he is just the opposite and is always so…. depressed. i think his friends should cheer him up by doing something that they know he loves more than anything. like take him back to a place that makes him remember all the good times that he has had in his lifetime.

The mysterious Piper is a demi-god who apperas huge compared to Mole and Rat, like most people obviously judge a book by its cover, and assumed that he was a giant, and not the kind that grows vegetables. Its like in school how bigger kids believe they are the alpha-male and smaller kids do what they say and fear them because they eithor are tough, or atleast act like it. The Piper is big and scary, but is really nice. This all going back to stereotypes. People who get straight A’s, are nerdy and seem weak. Those who dedicate their lives to sports are seemed more fit and strong, when most of them just act like they can beat you up, They usually can’t. If you stay standing, they will give up. Anyway Back on topic; The mysterious piper is a stranger, and a stranger is just a person you haven’t met yet. Mole and Rat assumed he was bad but he q=was really a nice guy who loves playing music. (Pardon my French), When you assume you make an ASS out of U and ME.
When most people say they are depressed, they just mean “very sad”. In Toad’s case he IS depressed and there is an easy way to prove it. From earlier chapters,, Toad was outgoing, loopy, and fun! He didn’t care what other people thought of him and only payed attention to the good things in life. No he is always having a bad day. When someone says that they are having a “Bad Day”, its usually because of the first thing that happened that day, (or the last thing that happened yesterday) was a bad moment and they can only remember that moment when other things happen. When something happy occurs they think “this is great, but that was worse”. What they need to think is “that was bad, but atleast this happened”. You always remember the last memory or a drastic memory in your head. So when you are comparing two things, you put the happy memory at the END so it will be LAST. Eventually all of these LAST memories will add up and overpower the drastic memory that is keeping them depressed. This would be a good stratedgy to use to help Toad. All i know is that Mole, Rat, and Badger need to help fix Toad before he turns utterly depressed and can never change back!
1) At first, everyone things the piper is just one big scary demi-god. He actually turns out to be a nice person who cares about others and the forest. His song says that how there is chaos, rage , and hatred in the world.
2) Earlier in the book, Toad was happy and excited. Now, he isn’t being his old self and he is getting depressed. I think his friends should always stick by his side and talk to him if they see him not being himself.
