England Book Club: The Wind in the Willows – part 5
This week we’ll read the next two chapters of The Wind in the Willows (Chapter 9 – Wayfarers All and Chapter 10 – The Further Adventures of Toad).
In chapter 9. Rat begins to feel a special kind of stirring in his heart. After meeting the sea rat, our Rat has an intense desire to see the world.
When I was reading the chapter, one particular section stopped me. I don’t know if anywhere in literature I’ve ever seen a more perfect quote to represent TAP. Read the quote:
“Take the adventure, heed the call, now ere the irrevocable moment passes! ‘Tis but a banging of the door behind you, a blithesome step forward, and you are out of the old life and into the new! Then some day, some day long hence, jog home here if you will, when the cup has been drained and the pay has been played, and sit down by your quiet river with a store of goodly memories for company.”
Here’s the assignment:
- Carefully read the quote above. Try to figure out what it means (it may mean something different to everyone).
- Re-write the quote in your own words. (include your re-written quote in your post).
- Tell me what it means to you, especially considering that you’re about to be come a wayfarer.
Each of these answers should take somewhere between 5-7 sentences.
Every student in our England group is required to participate. You must comment on this post with your thoughts, then come back and comment on what other people have said – you are required to make an effort to keep the conversation going by replying to at least 2 other students (more than just “I agree” or “you are right.” Give them reasons why you agree/disagree or what they said that was meaningful – make this a discussion).
Minooka TAP 
1) I think it means to live out your dream’s. live your life. Dont let it pass you by. Experency your life. So you can have memories. Dont let your life be boring.
2) Experency adventure. Live yor life. Dont let the moment’s pass. Let the door bang behind you while you run. A huge step foward, and you are out of your old life and into a new one. Then some day long from now. Come home if you can, when your life has been fuflied. Live the rest of your life in peace, with all of your memories.
3) To me this quote mean’s that you shouldent let life pass you by you should take all the chance’s you get and the oppertunity’s you get when they come to you because you may never get those chances again, so take the adventure, move on with your life dont let those moment’s pass you by run to them, move out of your old life and old memories and into the new life and new memories. then one day when you have fufiled your lifes goals and have amazing memories go back to where it all began and then you can be content with your life because you know you did everything you always wanted to and that you lived your life to the fullest. you can go home and live the rest of your life in peace, and you will alway’s have the memories of your life. the one you wanted but never thought you could have.
I agree with you I think that you should live out your dreams and your life. And never let them pass you by.
I agree on the meaning of a wayfarer. They are always ready to explore. I can connect to the people in Minooka TAP. They are always ready to explore.
I agree. Life is worth living when you have the choice. ‘Don’t let it pass you by’ is something more people should keep in mind when they are just sitting on the couch waiting to pass on and leave the world behind without looking back.

I love how you wrote in your own words what you thought it meant. I agree with you that if you don’t live you life it will be boring. We only have one life to live so we have to live it to the fullest. My favorite part was in your last sentence how you said” the one you wanted but you never thought you could have.” I really think Toad needs to live up to his potential and not waist his life being a theif and a horrid friend.

I agree with Bachmann. If you are going to live, live to the fullest. Your life shouldn’t be boring. And Toad should think about that last quote.
I do not really understand what you are trying to say abouut the quote, because my perspective is basically change can be a good thing, but also bad, but I kind of see where you are going because, being yourself and living your dreams, I guess can kind of relate in a way.

Ah, so true. I believe this quote means something along the lines of ‘Don’t let life pass you by’ also! Everyone needs to try and be happy for a better future.
I think you are very right on what the poem means I said in other words basically what you said.

1) what I thinks the quote means the only thing that is stopping you from living out the life that is adventurouse is you. All you need to do is step out of your comfort zone and try new things.
2) Take what comes at you in life now. Everytime that you don’, another moment that you have had fun going on an adventure. It’s only the closing of a dorr, a meat step forward that keeps you from moving on from your old life. And on day you can go home when your adventures are complete. Have company over and share a days worth of great memories.
3) to me this quote means when life throws something at you don’t try to dodge it ride it out through the end. I mean if I did that do you reall think that I would be writing this answer to question three… Yeah didnt think so. I mean who knows what wouldbhappen if you didn’t take the chances. No one knows. And no one would know what can become of it if you do. So just take the chances when you get them in life so you up can be happy because I don’t think that anyone wants to not take chances and end up living alone with 40 cats and dress them up and talk to them like people no… I don’t know what you want to happen but I hope that doesn’t happen to me.
I agree with you it is alway’s good to step out of your comfort zone and try new thing’s every once and a while. Even if it mean’s being a little uncomfterable, for a little while. I also agree with you because sometime’s there is that one thing or one pieace of you that hold’s you back but if you break out of that shell, you can face your fear’s and get to a place you maybe never thought you could get to.
I agree with you about that yourself is the one thing stoping you from taking chances and that you need to step out of your comfort zone.
What ccaught my attention in your comment, Mckayla, is how you admitted that you have to step out of your comfort zone to be able to try new things. My favorite part about your comment was when you said that “when something is thrown at you, don’t try to dodge it, ride it out through the end.” This is my favorite because I can relate to it. There is a difference between taking a stupid dare(like Toad seems to do) and trying new, weird,but exciting thiings( like all his friends do) because you have to live your life to the fullest, or whats the point of living?

I had to step out of my comfert zone a ton of times. When I went to Disney I had to go on roller coasters, and I hate them. Im so terrafied of heights, but I came out and it turned out to be fun.
I never thought of that. Our comfort zones is what stops us, and sometimes we have to tell it to shut up and ignore it, and sometimes you may prove your comfort zone to be… Dragging you down at times.

How you worded number 2 is a little confusing, but I get where your going.(:
1. To me, the quote means to go on in your life and let whatever comes hit you.( not literally hit you in the face.) Your future could have many fun adventures ahead of you. An when you look back at the memories you had, you will know that you had a good life.
2. Go ahead of yourself in the future. The world has new options that are waiting to be discovered. Don’t let someone hold you back in life. Whatever you think is right, do it. You never know. You might be making the decision of a life time.
3.I would like to be a wayfarer. Travelling is my favorite thing. Im always curious of new adventours. That’s kind of the reason I like tap. The United Kingdom will be a new adventure for me.

I agree , I think TAP is the door that opens that allows us to travel which is our calling and it will create some awesome memories.
1) Life your life to the fullest and dream big. The only way you fulfill your dreams is to go for it take chances.
2) Get out of your comfort zone, when their a chance you take it, don’t pass it by because you cant turn back and want to do it then. Just by a chance you take out of the comfort zone you can change your perspective on life. 1) To me this quote means go out and have an amazing adventure and don’t just sit around like a lump. Don’t wait for an invitation. The thought of going is you invitation.
2) The quote in my own words is ‘Go explore the world and if you get tired come back home to the sweet remembrance of where you grew up and then embark on you journey again. The world is too big and full of amazing things to see in one lifetime. The least you can do is try.
3) What it means to me because I’m a wayfarer might be different from most people because wayfarer means a person who travels on foot, and most people would rather ride in a car or train to explore the world, but i would rather walk on foot and feel the padded down grass beneath my feet than smell the gas of the train or see the smoke from buildings we don’t need.

What? I think that it means to not let the good things pass you by. That the doors that open are the good things after the bad things happen which are the doors that close. Even though you think that something good happens and it passes you by, there is always another door that opens to something better.

I have a totally different perspective of the quote than you dfo, but as I look at your ideas and the quote I can kind of relate to what you are saying.

I think it means that you have to take your chances and follow your dreams. If you don’t, you will always look back asking, why didn’t I instead of I remember that it was awesome. You can’t miss out on the important things. You also can’;t second guess yourself, you just have to go with it.

I agree on the regret part. If you just waste your life, then what’s the point in living? We have an amazing opportunity to go to England, and I want to look back remembering how we went into a church or a castle and learned all about who lives or lived there, and what went on there, not how I was kicked out of tap. So you’re right, we can’t miss out on things. We have to just get up and make memories.
1) I think the quote means live your life the way you want, don’t listen to anyone else! Find the adventure in you and let it show who you are or can be. Change is a good thing, take out the old and become the new. But, just because there is an adventure in you, pace yourself and make it normal.
2) Look inside of you and listen to what is calling for you. WHen you hear the knocking that means to start something new, be fresh and different. After everything new has been done, go home and relax, be with your family and friends, the new you go with them. 1) I think that the passage meens what you have done your whole life. You could of had the most boring life in the world. But you still have a story to tell the genaration before you. You can always make a story out of nothing. Thats what I got out of the passage.
2) your life may be tedious, or uninteresting, or bland. It might not be super, or the most exciting. But you can still make it exciting to you. You can still make storys, or life lessons out of your life. There is always something.

1. This quote means that ou have to live life to the fullest. It means that you have to explore new things every chance you get and make your own memories. If you do this then you will aprectiate the memories more.

1. I think the quote means you should take whatever life-changing opportunity comes to you. I thought it meant when doors close, another opens. Opportunities are going to pass you by if you don’t take them and run with it. Then you could remember the memories and the satisfaction of taking so many of the opportunities.

1.) To me the quote meant things may be crazy or hard now for you, but later you’re able to kick off your shoes, sit back, and look back and smile on your old memories. It also sort of appeals to me by saying be what you want to be and who you want to be. Live how YOU want to live, it’s no one else’s business to change that.
2.) Go on every adventure, every trip, don’t let anyone hold you back. Just follow your heart and you’ll know the way. The troubles are far behind hence one more step forwards. Pushing through and being yourself will open the doorway to reality, your reality. All your troubles from before are now nothing but memories. Relax, sit back, and recollect on what now is your past. Out with the old, and in with the new.
3.) The quote sort of means a lot to me. It really sort of taught me to not let anyone hold me back and just follow what my heart tells me to do in a sense. I live the way I want to, not controlled by someone else anymore. In a sense, this quote sort of gives me strength to stand up for myself from anyone restricting/holding me back. Also including to take every chance, or opportunity. You never know what will become of it. It could even be the best memory I might ever have in a lifetime.

Hmm, never thought of the it that way. You’re right! Everyone should live how they want to live. There’s no answer key to life so someone can’t say you’re living wrong.
Yeah! Exactly! If everyone constantly worried about their image or others trying to hold you back constantly life would just be dull and depressing. What would we be if we weren’t actually who we are? That’s kind of awkward to think about.

That’s kinda what I thought to. When I was writing this post it really had me make personal connections to what the question was asking me. That’s probably where that part came from in my response.
I think that the first question/quote is trying to say do something with our life. Take some risks and have some fun. Also when it says heed the call that means to be ready for anything anybody throws at you. One problem that mole could have heeded the call for was when toad was acting foolish and spent lots of his money on stupid, silly things.
Take risks in your life. Have some fun and get out of your comfort zone! Be ready for any adventure or any problem that anyone or anything throws at you. Take challenges that need to be taken.
To me this means to have a good life, be ready, and most of all have fun. In the quote above that I put I said take risks, that means when your in one country and your family is in another don’t freak out know that you were chosen to take this challenge for a reason. Also a very important saying in my quote was have fun with your life when I say have fun that doesn’t mean you have to go wild and crazy it means to be mature and safe at the same time
1) To me the quote means to be free and to let nothing hold you back.You should be able to do what you feel and express your emotions freely.I think it also means to share your thoughts and ideas.
2)Don’t say no to adventure, go you will never get aunther chance. Don’t look back on what your leaving behind you just keep moving ahead . You are at the start of a new life and better things are going to happen. Then in the future when your older you can go back to where your adventures began and share memories you’ve gathered on your travels with friends and family.
3) To me this quote means for starters not to let anything pass you by. Don’t live life in fear or avoid something just because you don’t know the out come . You should be able to do as you feel and trust yourself and not what others say or do around you. If you want to do something just do it . Life is just way to short to be wasted have fun with it .It also means to me at one point or aunther you have to let go of the past go and move on .Mistakes happen you have to accept what the out come is shrug it off and learn from it.

3.to me this means isf you get the oppurtunity to take an adventure do it don’t just watch the oppurtunnity pass you by .It’s like when people tell you to chase your dreams and when you have the chance take it . like me and around 40 other people have the chance to go on a amazing adventure andwe all took the chance to go and we took it .In the end of this quote it also states something along the lines of you will remeber all the good times you had on your adventure.which to me is the one of the best parts of an adeventure because its like you relive it again.

1.) To me this quote means that you should never be stuck in your past, and learn to move on.
2.) When you need to move on, dont look back. Everything will be ok in the end, life is about having fun. Not living by the rules. Learn to let loose and take adventures. Never take anything too seriously. Because you only have 1 life to live. Your old life is behind you, Now its time to leave it there.

1) I belive the passage means that you need to live life to the fullest and start a new happy full life and when its ur time remember all the happy times and be happy wityh your life.
2) Hear the challange as it passes as an unspeakable moment, trying so hard for you to recognize it and see its importance. And you do and become a new you and then, long from now you’ll come back to see, when your old and do’s paid. You’ll sit to your death bed, remembering all the good times, you will die, with a smile on your face from those moments :).
3) To me this passage means that you need to live life to the fullest. Because you live it too seriously and soon your going to be ol dand dead and realize that too late.
