Sherlock Holmes
March 4, 2012
Before we do that, let’s find out a little bit about Holmes, his partner Dr. Watson, and the rest of the characters, the stories, and the settings of the Sherlock Holmes stories.
Here’s the assignment:
- Do a little research about Sherlock Holmes. Read a few short stories if you want – they can be found for free at manybooks.com. Watch a few movies if you want. Read a few websites if you want.
- Come back here and post 5-10 interesting facts about Holmes (the characters, the author, the settings, the mysteries, any of those topics would be fine).
- Be sure not to repeat what anyone else has written. Carefully read what other kids have posted so that you’re not just repeating their information.
Every student in our England group is required to participate. You must comment on this post with your thoughts, then come back and comment on what other people have said – you are required to make an effort to keep the conversation going by replying to at least 2 other students (more than just “I agree” or “you are right.” Give them reasons why you agree/disagree or what they said that was meaningful – make this a discussion).
Next, we’ll be reading The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle – you should begin looking for your own copy at a local library or book store soon, but you can also find free ebook copies online at ManyBooks.com. We will start reading that book next week.

1. Completed. Facts. Look down there. 😀
2. Facts:
Fact One: Sherlock Holmes is based on a person, Herlock Sholmes.
Fact Two: Dr Watson was not a doctor at first.
Fact Three: He was a fictional detective.
Fact Four: The most known story of Sherlock Holmes would be The Hounds Of The Baskervilles, the one we are reading.
Fact Five: Sherlock Holmes did some drugs.
Fact Six: He never said, “Elementary, my dear Watson”
Fact Seven: He had an older brother, Mycroft.
That’s all I could find. :]
Danielle, you might want to double check your facts before posting them. Herlock Sholmes was a character in a French story based on the real Sherlock Holmes, not a real person that the character was based on. Also, Dr. Watson was a medical doctor in the British Army. He fought in the British war in India. He was injured and returned home to England where he became roommates with Holmes. He was a doctor before the first page of the first Holmes book.
The internet is full of information. Some of it is wrong, so I suggest everyone check their facts with more than one source before posting them.
Mr. C.
Oh. A lot of websites said Dr Watson wasn’t a doctor. Well, I guess they’re wrong if that’s what happened.
I agree with you he did have an older brother mycroft.
Even if the information is wrong it would be cool for all those things to be true in a person.
Actually, not all of it is wrong. Only the Dr. Watson and the Herlock Sholmes ones were wrong..
I agree with most of your thoughts, but they are all mostly the same, and are pretty much basic facts about Sherlock Holmes. But, I still learned a little put of your answers!
Sherlock did do some drugs which included morphine, cocaine, and tobacco.
I never knew he did drugs. Is that why he really like to smoke on his pipe?
must have been since he you know he always did have a pipe in his mouth.
Wow, I never knew Sherlock Holmes did drugs! It must be what he puts in his pipe. Hmm, very interesting facts though.. Thanks for sharing.

These are really cool facts! I did not know any of these, except number eight because all older British characters used those!
I toatle agree with you he was a very knowen man and there were many stories that were told about him.
I read some of the disguises Sherlock did. It’s pretty incredible how well he played them off. I kinda pictured how I thought each one would look. It reminded me of when me and my friends dress up in costumes and make movies.
Maybe for your second reason you could have found something more in depth about Sherlock, but all of your other reasons are really good!(:
I have read 2 or 3 sherlock holems stories in the past and did a little more research on him, his partners and tha author. These facts are interesting to me and connect to the characters:
1. “Sherlock” really means blonde, though he is actually dark-haired
2. Holmes’s creator ironically believed in spiritualism, like ghosts and faries.
3. The stories are known all around the erath and have been recreated many times, and more unique stories have been told. There has actually been otherperformances, too, like movies, musicals, and even a ballet!
4. In 1964, Sherlock Holmes was such a best seller, it became the best selling book around the world, second only to the Bible.
5. Conan Doyle based the character “Sherlock Holmes” off of his old college professer “Joseph Bell”
6.Holmes abused drugs such as cocaine in one of his books: “the Sign of Four”
7.Conan was knighted for his popular work in fiction, and ran for parliament twice, but lost both times (but got a respectively large amount of votes).
8. The adress “221b Baker Street London, England” was where the famous detective lived in the fictional stories. That same adress is now a Sherlock Holmes Museum toady in REAL London, England. It has been known to get mail for the master of disquise himself, proving what an awesome fictional story Arthur Conan Doyle has written.
I didnt know tha it was the second bets seller around the world.
Those are amazing facts. I never would have known that. You probably did a lot of research on him.
Sherlock Holmes stories sound like fairy tales. We learned last year and this year in Language Arts that they were changed and retold many times. Apparently so were the Sherlock Holmes stories as well!
Just because a story was passed around through mouth and changed a lot, doesn’t make it a fairy tale/folk tale. And I don’t believe Sherlock Holmes stories were passed around. They were written at one time and published into a best-seller around the world.
Thats funny that his name means blonde
I never knew Sherlock ment that 🙂
I never knew his name meant blonde! Thats awsome!
Sherlock means blondie? Haha that’s so weird.
People say blondes aren’t that smart. This one is a detective! Eat it stereotypes! That just show you cant judge a book by its cover, or its meaning.
The first observation I did not know, it reminds me of Hitler being part Jewish.
Your facts are so in depth and specific! They are very interesting!(:

Sherlock was a consluting detective from 1881-1904. At this time he lived with his friend and his former coleague Dr. John H. Watson.
